Washington State L&I Workers' Compensation (Out-of-State Care), Kansas City

Out-of-state care for Washington L&I workers' comp claims in Blue Springs and Overland Park: therapy, pain care and the reports your claim manager needs.

Washington L&I Workers’ Compensation Care in Kansas City

If you are a Washington State worker who is temporarily or permanently in the Kansas City area, Core Medical Center treats Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) workers’ compensation patients for out-of-state care, with the documentation and reporting these claims require, at both our Blue Springs, Missouri and Overland Park, Kansas clinics.

In short: with an open Washington L&I claim, you can continue treatment hundreds of miles from home, as long as your out-of-state provider holds an L&I provider account. We provide the care, communicate directly with your claim manager, and produce the documentation your claim depends on, so your recovery does not have to pause because you are out of state.

Services We Offer for Washington L&I Claims

If you have an open L&I claim through the Washington State Fund or a self-insured employer, you may qualify for ongoing care out of state. Our integrated team provides:

  • Physical therapy and occupational therapy, delivered by licensed therapists
  • Chiropractic care and medically directed pain management
  • Impairment ratings when your condition reaches maximum medical improvement, a responsibility L&I gives your attending provider
  • Functional capacity and return-to-work evaluations when your claim manager authorizes them

Independent medical exams work differently on an L&I claim. Your claim manager requests them through L&I’s scheduling system, and a department-approved examiner performs them, as L&I’s independent medical exam information explains.

Because our medical, therapy and rehabilitation teams work under one roof, your treatment and your paperwork stay aligned rather than scattered across separate offices.

Understanding Your L&I Claim (Washington State)

If you were injured at work in Washington, your treatment and benefits are covered through the Washington State Fund, run by L&I, or by your self-insured employer. L&I benefits include medical treatment and time-loss compensation that replaces part of your wages.

After the first visit, care has to come from a provider in L&I’s network, as L&I’s medical benefits page sets out. Outside Washington, that means a provider with an L&I provider account, as L&I’s out-of-state care coordination page explains.

Travel to treatment is reimbursed only when your claim manager preauthorizes it, the provider is more than 15 miles from your home, and no provider within 15 miles can treat your condition. The rules are on L&I’s expense reimbursement page.

HIPAA and Workers’ Comp for Washington State Employees

When you file a claim with L&I, your signed Report of Accident, or the Provider’s Initial Report on a self-insured claim, also authorizes your providers to release claim-related medical records to L&I or the self-insured employer.

Federal privacy law exempts workers’ compensation from HIPAA’s authorization requirement (45 CFR 164.512(l)), so no additional HIPAA forms are required to send documentation tied to your claim, as L&I’s guidance on HIPAA and workers’ comp explains.

Common questions

Washington L&I Workers' Comp FAQ

Can I continue L&I treatment if I have left Washington?

Yes. Washington L&I lets an injured worker keep choosing an attending provider after moving out of state. After the first visit, an out-of-state provider needs an L&I provider account to treat you and be paid, and your claim must still be open for the condition being treated. Contact your claim manager to confirm, and our team will coordinate the documentation from there.

What services do you provide for Washington L&I claims?

Physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic care, pain management, impairment ratings when your condition reaches maximum medical improvement, and functional capacity and return-to-work evaluations when your claim manager authorizes them. We send progress reports to your L&I claim manager, or to your self-insured employer, so treatment and documentation stay on schedule.

Do you handle the reporting and updates with my L&I claim manager?

Yes. We send the progress reports L&I requires to your claim manager, or to your self-insured employer's claims representative. When you signed the Report of Accident, or the Provider's Initial Report on a self-insured claim, you also signed an authorization that lets your providers release claim-related records to L&I or the self-insured employer, so no extra HIPAA forms are needed.

Is L&I out-of-state care covered for me?

If your claim is open and the condition being treated is accepted, L&I (on a State Fund claim) or your self-insured employer pays for treatment from a provider in L&I's network or, outside Washington, a provider with an L&I provider account. Coverage specifics should always be confirmed with your claim manager before your visit.
