What Are the Risks? What Should You Do after a Head Injury on the Job?
According to published medical studies, nearly 25% of all mild traumatic brain injuries (also referred to as concussions) occur in the workplace. While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that some occupations pose a greater risk—think construction, warehouse, law enforcement and EMT, mining and agriculture—the risk can be significant in the vast majority of jobs.
The Common Causes of Concussion or Mild TBI at Work
Data consistently shows that most workplace concussions or TBIs are the result of:
- Work-related motor vehicle accidents—The vast majority of car, truck and motorcycle accidents involve some level of traumatic brain injury
- Falls—This includes slips and falls due to clutter, slippery surfaces, cracked or broken pavement, steps or stairs, as well as falls from heights, such as ladders or scaffolding
- Falling objects—Materials, inventory, worksite debris and other objects
- Impact with stationary objects, such as walls, doors, shelving and poles
What You Want to Do in the Immediate Aftermath of a Workplace Concussion
When you’ve suffered any type of bump or blow to the head, regardless of the degree of impact, you want to seek medical care as soon as possible. If your injuries prevent you from moving about under your own power, you should let co-workers call for emergency responders and go to the hospital by ambulance. As with any medical issue, you want to work with medical professionals who focus on the specific conditions you’re facing. At Core Medical Center, we offer acute and immediate care of all types of head trauma, including concussions and other traumatic brain injuries.
With any type of injury, you should also notify your employer as soon as possible. Concussion injuries sustained on the job are generally covered by workers’ compensation. You may be required initially to submit to an examination by a doctor chosen by your employer or the workers’ compensation insurance provider, but you can ultimately choose your own healthcare provider, subject to approval by the insurance company.
