When you’re in pain, the last thing you want to do is waste precious time on “solutions” that don’t work. You need relief – and you need it now.
At Core Medical Center, we understand the importance of getting at the root of what is causing your pain. That way, we can come up with a treatment plan that doesn’t just briefly relieve your pain but addresses the condition with more long-term or even permanent relief.
When you visit our pain management clinic, there are four initial assessments that you can expect to be part of your first appointment:
Physical Exam
Depending on your particular symptoms, you may be examined by a doctor, chiropractic specialist, nurse practitioner, and/or physical therapist. Your physical exam will include an overall health evaluation, in addition to an assessment of the pain you are currently experiencing.
How this is conducted will depend on the location and severity of your particular pain. We will not do anything to make an injury worse or to cause more pain for you.
We will need to be able to assess the subjective experience of the pain you’re feeling. This may be done in a number of ways, including asking you to rate your pain on a scale of 1-10, or otherwise verbally describe it. We will examine the target area for any noticeable abnormalities, as well as ask about other areas of your health that may have an impact on the area in question.
Medical History
One of the most important parts of any initial pain management visit is a detailed review of your medical history. This typically includes a discussion of your current symptoms, risk factors, personal and family history of disease, and anything else that may be relevant to know.
We take the time to listen to what you have to say. Often, our patients have information about their condition that can be extremely valuable to determine what may be causing their pain. We strive to partner with our patients so that we’re able to offer the most effective pain management treatment for them.
Diagnostic Testing
Often, diagnostic testing such as X-rays or an ultrasound is performed in order to identify or to rule out conditions like bone fractures, or obvious tears, or degenerative changes in soft tissue like muscles, tendons, and ligaments. One of the most common applications for a neuromuscular ultrasound is to identify a pinched nerve, which is a common cause of musculoskeletal pain and other symptoms, such as numbness and tingling.
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCSs) are additional tests that are often used to determine if there is a specific problem with the functioning of your muscle tissue or the related nerves. Both are quick and relatively easy and painless diagnostic measures that can help your healthcare provider pinpoint exactly what may be causing your pain.
Treatment Planning
Once you’ve received a diagnosis and we understand your symptoms, history, and treatment goals, we are equipped to discuss your treatment options with you. Often, there are multiple paths that can be pursued.
For example, the source of your pain may respond best to interventional pain management techniques, such as trigger-point therapy, viscosupplementation, a nerve block, or even regenerative medicine like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to immediately address severe pain and/or inflammation. After initial treatment has been administered or prescribed, then physical therapy or chiropractic services can be carried out to further address your pain.
It is our goal to relieve your pain. We tailor each of our treatment solutions to each individual patient in order to most fully address their pain-relief needs.
