How to Tell When Your Condition Is Serious
Many head injuries are different from other types of trauma because they can’t be seen. With any type of bump or blow to the head, your brain can bounce off the inside of your skull, causing damage to cells and leading to inflammation or bleeding. But unless you have a penetrating or open head wound, there may be little or no external evidence of your injury. That can make it difficult to know whether you should see a doctor.
Always Get an Assessment After Any Type of Impact That Affects Your Head or Neck
The best advice, regardless of the level of impact, is to always seek medical attention when you’ve had any type of incident involving contact between your head and another object. That may be at an emergency room, an urgent care facility, or the offices of your primary care provider. As a general rule, your doctor will have the knowledge and tools to make an initial assessment and then either prescribe a regimen of care or refer you to the right professional, such as a neurologist or physiatrist.
Still wondering if you should be evaluated by a medical professional? If any of the following symptoms are present, go immediately for treatment:
- You lose consciousness for any length of time, even if it’s momentary.
- You find it difficult to verbalize your thoughts or process what others are saying.
- Your headache after the blow to the head lasts more than four hours.
- You experience any type of weakness or loss of strength or coordination anywhere in your body.
- You are bothered by light, noise, or smells.
- You have persistent nausea or vomiting.
