Are You More Likely to Suffer Head Trauma?
Statistics compiled by the Centers for Disease Control consistently show that certain groups of people have higher rates of TBI than others. If you know that you or someone you love is in one of those high-risk groups, it’s essential to take reasonable measures to stay safe.
The Demographics of Traumatic Brain Injury—Factors that Increase Your Risk
Research indicates that the following groups have a greater susceptibility to TBI:
- Individuals who have previously suffered a TBI—Even a mild concussion that didn’t require medical treatment can increase the likelihood of a subsequent TBI. Studies show that your likelihood of suffering another TBI doubles once you’ve had one.
- Adolescents—Data shows that teenagers have a higher TBI rate than any other demographic. Some of that can be attributed to the inclination of teens to engage in risky behavior, such as joyriding, but there’s also evidence that, when exposed to the same level of impact, teens are likely to experience more serious consequences. Scientists say their neural pathways are less developed and can be more easily compromised.
- Children and seniors—Small children and individuals over the age of 65 typically have more challenges with balance and are susceptible to fall-related TBIs.
- Anyone involved in a motor vehicle accident—Regardless of the level of impact, persons involved in car accidents often experience some level of brain trauma.
- Military personnel—Active-duty service personnel in proximity to explosions or persistent gunfire can be at a greater risk of concussion or other TBI.
- Assault victims—This category includes persons subjected to domestic violence and victims of muggings.
