How Long Before You Can Return to Normal Activities? What Is the Key to Your Recovery?
If you’re like most people, when you’re hurt, you want to get back to your regular life as quickly as possible. The same is true when you suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI). How long will it keep you from doing the things you love? What factors affect whether you’ll make a full recovery? When can you expect to reach maximum medical improvement?
The Most Important Factor in Your Recovery
Recovery time, and the extent of recovery, primarily depends on the severity of the injuries. Studies show that about 70% of all TBIs are diagnosed as concussions, or mild TBIs. With a concussion, you can expect to experience side effects for a period of a couple days up to a couple months. Side effects might include minor cognitive challenges, changes in sleep patterns, mood swings, or sensitivity to light or sound.
The vast majority of people who suffer a concussion return to full health within six to eight weeks. It’s important, though, that you’re careful not to suffer another concussion. The effects of a subsequent concussion are almost always worse than those of the initial one.
Even if your TBI is deemed moderate, you have a good chance (about 60%) of making a full physical and mental recovery. You can, however, expect it to take a significantly longer period of time to restore your health. Most estimates put the recovery period for a moderate TBI at six to twelve months.
Unfortunately, if you suffer a severe TBI, the likelihood of full recovery is low. Most research indicates that victims of severe TBI have a 20-40% chance of a good recovery after extensive rehab.
