The Types of Injuries Most Often Treated After a Car, Truck, or Motorcycle Crash
According to statistics gathered by the National Safety Council, there are, on average, more than 36,000 motor vehicle accidents every day—that’s over 13 million annually. Many are minor fender-benders and don’t cause injuries that require medical attention. However, in over 25% of car wrecks, an injured party ends up in the emergency room. That’s nearly 3.5 million ER visits every year.
What Are the Most Common Types of Injuries Caused by Auto Accidents?
In general, auto accident injuries stem from two incidents:
- Impact with something—often the interior of the vehicle, but in many cases the ground or some other stationary object
- Penetration by a foreign object, such as glass, metal, or debris
The most common type of injury suffered in motor vehicle accidents is a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Studies show that, in nearly 20% of car accidents, someone sustains a TBI. A TBI may result from any type of bump or blow to the head, but it can also occur when there’s no impact. TBIs are often associated with whiplash-type injuries, where the brain careens off the inside of the skull.
While spinal cord injuries are not the most common injury caused by a car accident, motor vehicle accidents are nonetheless the most frequent cause of spinal cord injury, accounting for nearly 40% of all spinal cord trauma.
For many reasons, it’s also fairly common for parties to a car, truck, or motorcycle accident to suffer some type of facial injury, whether broken bones, eye injuries, cuts, bruises, or abrasions.
Though safety improvements over the past quarter of a century have had a positive effect, neck and chest injuries are still commonly caused by motor vehicle accidents, as drivers and passengers make impact with the dashboard or steering wheel. Seatbelts and airbags can also cause significant injury to your upper torso.
