The Wide Range of Physical Injuries Caused by Car Crashed
According to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 2.5 million Americans seek medical care every year for injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident. As a general rule, those injuries fall into two broad categories: injuries caused by impact with the ground or some foreign object, and injuries caused by flying debris.
The Different Types of Injuries Commonly Occurring in a Car Accident
Drivers, passengers and pedestrians can be at risk of a broad spectrum of injuries as a result of a car, truck or motorcycle crash:
- Head and neck injuries—According to government data, nearly 40% of drivers hospitalized after a wreck had some level of TBI. Studies show that many car accident victims who don’t seek medical treatment may have sustained a mild traumatic brain injury, or concussion.
- Spinal cord trauma—Whiplash and other similar injuries can cause significant damage to your spinal cord, from bruising and inflammation to impingement or even partial paralysis
- Facial injuries—When there’s impact, there can often be flying glass, metal or other debris. In addition, your face can collide with a steering wheel, window or dashboard, leading to cuts, bruises, eye injuries or broken bones.
- Chest injuries—Whether or not you’re wearing a seatbelt, you can still suffer substantial trauma to your ribs, chest muscles and internal organs, either from impact with a dashboard or steering wheel or the deployment of an airbag.
- Soft-tissue injury—One of the most common and most debilitating consequences of a motor vehicle accident is injury to tendons, muscles, ligaments and other connective tissue, including tears, sprains and strains
- Broken bones—It’s fairly common, when there’s impact with another vehicle, to suffer fractures. Most often, the bones broken include arm bones, leg bones and ribs.
- Heart attack—It’s not commonly known that the stress of a car crash can cause cardiac distress and potential cardiac arrest
