The Common Symptoms to Look for When Someone Suffers a Blow to the Head
In the aftermath of any type of head trauma, it’s often the bystanders or other people present who will be in the best position to determine whether it’s serious, requiring immediate medical attention. Often, the victims of a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI) will try to shake it off, particularly when it happens in an athletic event. The immediate diagnosis and treatment of a concussion, though, can make a critical difference in the impact and outcome of the injury. Here are the things to look for when someone around you suffers a bump or blow to the head.
Was There a Loss of Consciousness?
Unconsciousness is not a requirement for a concussion or traumatic brain injury. However, if the victim did pass out, even momentarily, it’s typically a pretty clear indication of a significant head injury. Immediately seek treatment.
Does the Victim Have Any Loss of Memory?
If the person cannot remember specific things, either of events immediately before the accident or of the moments following the bump to the head, chances are good they have suffered a concussion. If he or she was participating in an athletic event, can he or she remember the game, the opponent, the score and his/her involvement in the competition?
What Is the Person’s Interaction with You?
Does she act confused or dazed? Is he slow to respond to questions or to get up/move about? Does she need to consider your questions for an unreasonable period of time, or do you observe a lack of focus on you or the surrounding environment? Do you notice changes in mood, behavior or personality?
Does the Person Exhibit Balance or Stability Issues?
Is she able to stand on her own? Does he rock back and forth or show other signs of dizziness, vertigo or difficulty with balance?
If you observe any of the above symptoms, you should immediately take the person to the hospital emergency room or an urgent care facility. You’ll also want to make certain they schedule an appointment with their primary care physician as soon as possible.
